Dr. Shannon Cooper is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and a longtime Sacramento resident. She has been in private practice for over 18 years and works with a wide array of clients across the developmental spectrum representing different ethnic/cultural backgrounds and diverse diagnostic presentations. She previously worked as a tenured professor at California State University, Sacramento and most recently as an administrator in the California community college system.
She believes that life happens to “all of us” and there are times in life when we find ourselves feeling overwhelmed with everyday life. In her work with clients, she assists them in developing the skills they need to create the changes they seek to better their lives.
Her primary therapeutic approach is solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT). She assists people who have difficulty finding strategies they can use to cope with life’s challenges. “People, oftentimes, have the skills to manage and create positive change in their lives, however, they need help in recognizing the problem-solving strategies that have worked and the ones they may need to discard.” She helps individuals envision the change(s) they would like to see and then work collaboratively to develop a series of incremental steps that will support them in accomplishing their goals.
Her areas of specialty include treating individuals across the developmental spectrum representing different ethnic/cultural backgrounds and diverse diagnostic presentations, couples, & families; substance abuse evaluations and treatment of collective trauma in under-resourced communities.
